16th OCTOBER SOUTH WALES ARGUS- ADERYN TO OPEN

Mental health unit opening date
A CONTROVERSIAL new mental health unit will open in a Gwent village on Monday.
Partnerships in Care, the firm behind the centre, called Aderyn, in Goytre, near Abergavenny, said they had received clearance from Health Inspectorate Wales to open.
The first four patients will move in on the first day and half of the 17 spaces are expected to be filled by Christmas.
The plans for the building, the former brain injuries rehab centre Beechwood House, caused controversy when they were announced earlier this year.
Partnerships initially said mental health patients with any criminal conviction except child sex offences could be placed at the new unit, sparking residents' fears, especially as it is close to the village school.
They have since agreed that no one with any sex offence conviction will be placed there but concerns remain that Aderyn could still house dangerous offenders.
Helen Oliver, a parent governor at Goytre Fawr Junior and Infants School, is one of the leading campaigners against the scheme.
